reuse your used wedding dressAfter the “I do’s” have been said, the cake has been cut, and the honeymoon has been taken, you are probably excited and ready to get down to the business of being married. Married life is wonderful, but you also spent countless hours researching your gown, picking it out, and carefully shimming into it on your wedding day.

Because your wedding dress was such a big part of the affair, you might want to figure out what you’ll be doing with that gorgeous gown now that its day in the sun has passed. Here’s three great ideas for what to do with your used wedding dress.

Repurpose Your Gown

Your wedding gown needn’t sit in a box in the back of your closet. Today, more than ever, newlyweds are using their wedding gowns for other purposes, which can help you remember the special moments of your wedding day. If you don’t mind the idea of your dress being chopped up, consider asking a seamstress to create a cocktail dress out of your gorgeous gown. If you are a crafty woman you can use some of the fabric to create cool throw pillows, a tablecloth for special events, or a christening gown for your first son or daughter.

Your wedding gown can be used for all types of home decor, too. Some brides have taken to creating a shadow box with pieces of their used wedding dress, and hanging it in a special place in their first home. Not only does it look gorgeous over a mantle, but it is a regular reminder of the magic of the wedding day. If this idea interests you, ask the preservation company you are using about framing options. Many bridal gown preservation companies will offer unique options for displaying your gown.

Donate It to a Good Cause

If you can’t bear to see your dress cut up and repurposed into a completely new entity, you might want to look for a charity that accepts used wedding gowns. There are several charities currently out there that help outfit brides on a slim budget with gorgeous gowns they could not otherwise afford.

There are other charities that accept wedding gowns, and then sell them to donate money to charity and other causes. Brides Against Breast Cancer is one such charity. Angel Gown turns used wedding gowns into gowns for newborns that have passed away in the NICU. These great charities are just a few that will take your used wedding dress and make it something special for another person.

Sell It to Another Bride

In recent years, the market for used wedding gowns has exploded. Many budget-conscious brides are on the hunt for designer gowns at bargain basement prices, and one way for them to get that is by buying a used wedding dress. If you happen to be a bride with a designer gown you can cash in big here, and recoup some of the money spent on your wedding attire. You can sell your used wedding dress to a consignment shop, or list it with one of the several online outfitters that specialize in selling used wedding gowns.

Remember, your dress was an important part of your wedding day, so you should honor it in whatever way you feel most comfortable. Whether you choose to display it, repurpose it, donate it or sell it, always remember how you felt in it the day you said I do.
