Wow - now that is a dirty wedding gown!
We decided to take some before and after photos of a couple of wedding gowns to show how our wedding gown preservation and cleaning really does make a difference.
The first wedding gown was very dirty around the hem with black dirt. This a common stain. You can see the top wedding gown stains and how to avoid them.

The pictures do a good job of showing how much of the dirt was removed. If your gown looks like this there is hope to restore it to the way it was the day it was purchased.

What cleaning method is used in our wedding gown preservation process?
There are a couple of methods of wedding gown cleaning we use based on the type of material the wedding dress is made out of:
Before either bridal gown cleaning method is used the gown goes through an inspection using special lights that can pick up any invisible stains such as perspiration, white wine or sugers.
The gowns are spot cleaned for any stains found in this initial stage. It is very common for the hem of the wedding gown to be very soiled and stained. Once the spot cleaning is complete the bridal gown will be cleaned with one of two methods based on the type of fabric.
Most gowns made today are either polyester, silk or a combination of the two fabrics.
If the gown is polyester we use a "wet clean" process in which the gown is hand washed in our proprietary process with cleaning agents that will not harm the fabric.
If the bridal gown is made of silk we use a dry cleaning process as the wet wash method would damage the fabric.
Once the bridal gown cleaning process is complete the gown will then be treated for the preservation. The gowns are them placed on a bust form and gently put into the preservation chest and shipped back to our customers.

Wedding Gown Cleaning - Question of the day
Can your wedding gown cleaning process remove self-tanning lotions and sprays?
The use of self-tanning lotions or spray tan has become more popular. Inevitably the use of these can stain your wedding gown.
Although it can become a mess on your gown, it can be removed with the proper cleaning techniques.

Caring for Silk Wedding Gowns
Silk fabrics used in wedding gowns require a little extra care.
Brides should understand silk's special characteristics and use the following recommendations to maintain and extend the life of their silk wedding gowns.
To keep your silk wedding gown looking beautiful and to extend life follow these simple guidelines:
- Avoid extreme changes in temperature when storing your wedding gown before and after your wedding.
- Do not expose your wedding gown to sunlight. If your wedding dress is white the sun exposure will discolor the dress. If your wedding gown is colored the sun exposure will fade it.
- Silk is a very delicate fabric and strong detergents will harm the fibers and cause it to lose its silky properties. When you get your wedding gown cleaned and preserved after your wedding be sure to use a reputable wedding gown preservation company that is familiar with handling this type of material.
- It best not to hang your wedding gown for a long period of time if you have intended creases in the dress design. This is because silk has a natural elasticity which does not hold creases well. Therefore, if you hang your wedding dress many of the creases may fall out.
- If your wedding gown requires a little pressing prior to your wedding day do it with a dry iron on a silk setting. Be careful if you choose to use steam. Steam can be used on heavier silks but could cause puckering and shrinkage on finer fabrics.
- When you are getting ready for your wedding do your best to avoid getting any lipstick, perfume or other make-up on your silk dress. Silk fabric is easily damaged by alcohol-based products such as hair spray and perfumes, and chemical products such as nail polish remover. Apply perfume and hair spray before putting on a silk garment as the mist from such products may cause stains. See our Silk Cleaning Tips.
- Should you need more hairspray after you get your wedding gwon on be sure to have a couple tee shirts or towels to put over the top of the dress to protect it when you spray. Have a manicure and pedicure before you get dressed to avoid being near any nail polish.

Here are some tips for spot cleaning silk.
Please Note: Always test an area in an inconspicuous part of the wedding gown first. If in doubt consult a wedding gown preservation and cleaning specialist.
What to use
Do not use a wet method of cleaning; generally use a moist sponge or cotton ball gently blotting the stained fabric until cleaned.
An absorbent towel underneath the wedding gown made of silk will help keep the treatment from touching other parts of your gown.
Red Wine
Club soda or white wine is your friend when attempting to get out red wine. Immediately apply club soda or white wine with a sponge to the stained area. Dab the stained area with a mixture of cool water and ammonia. Always gently blot dry the area.
Lipstick
The best to spot clean lipstick is to use a mixture of 3 tbsp. alcohol and 3 drops of baby shampoo. It is important to remove the lipstick stain as soon as you find it.
Perspiration
Perspiration stains are acid based and as time goes by they become alkaline stains. We suggest using a two part cleaning process to remove these stains. Add one tablespoon of vinegar to a half a cup of water. Blot the stained area with a cheese cloth or cotton ball, dry, and then use a mixture of alcohol and baby shampoo going over the same area. Always rinse using a blotting method to remove alcohol and shampoo solution.
Blood
One method used to clean blood stains is one part hydrogen peroxide to 9 parts water. Make sure you remove solution with warm water blotting afterwards with a clean towel to dry.
