Silk fabrics used in wedding gowns require a little extra care.
Brides should understand silk's special characteristics and use the following recommendations to maintain and extend the life of their silk wedding gowns.
To keep your silk wedding gown looking beautiful and to extend life follow these simple guidelines:
- Avoid extreme changes in temperature when storing your wedding gown before and after your wedding.
- Do not expose your wedding gown to sunlight. If your wedding dress is white the sun exposure will discolor the dress. If your wedding gown is colored the sun exposure will fade it.
- Silk is a very delicate fabric and strong detergents will harm the fibers and cause it to lose its silky properties. - It best not to hang your wedding gown for a long period of time if you have intended creases in the dress design. This is because silk has a natural elasticity which does not hold creases well. Therefore, if you hang your wedding dress many of the creases may fall out.

Silk fabric is easily damaged by alcohol-based products such as hair spray and perfumes, and chemical products such as nail polish remover.
